The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner is the archetype of a diver’s watch and possibly the most famous timepiece ever! In 1953 Rolex presented the first Submariner, the first watch to be waterproof for up to 100 meters depth.
A good 60 years later, the diving legend has not strayed far from their original model. Rolex has consistently avoided design experiments with the Submariner. However, the constant development of technology and materials has brought numerous innovations to their functionality over the decades.
The current models
Basically, the Submariner is offered in two versions, the original and less expensive version still with no date display (therefore “No Date”) and only available in stainless steel. The Submariner Date, with the characteristic date loupe at 3 o’clock, is available in different material and color versions. Most recently, Rolex presented a new version of the Submariner “No-Date” at the Baselworld 2012, with a new bezel and a new strap (released for the price of 5,840 euros, in mid-2017 it was already at 6,800 euros). Rolex updates the prices of its models regularly, and depending on the material, the price can vary significantly. The fact is: the price goes up, almost without exception.
