Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has long been one of the most famous watches in the world and, as far as its popularity with collectors is concerned, it is probably even in first place. Formally introduced as a timekeeping instrument for racing sports in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona initially did not yet show its name on the dial.

In the previous years, Rolex had already built some chronograph models, such as the Reference 6234, on whose dial was simply written “Chronograph”. Around 500 specimens of this watch are said to have been built annually between 1955 and 1961; their price in the early sixties was around $200. While these models were rather bad sellers in the early years, the so-called Pre-Daytonas are rare and sought after these days.
